How to Brighten Up Your Bedroom - New Year, New You!

If your home is your castle then your bedroom is your innermost sanctuary. You spend more time in your bedroom than any other place in your home. It should be a place of comfort and relaxation -- a well-thought-out bedroom will help you get better sleep, and you will feel much healthier and happier for it!

In the spirit of the new year, here are some of my favorite tips to brighten up your bedroom.

Declutter
Clearing all the clutter takes zero skill and the result will have your bedroom feeling bright, fresh and brand new. Being mindful of tidying up any room in your home requires a shift in awareness and habits to intentionally have a place for each thing you own so it doesn’t pile up. If you have an excess amount of stuff and not enough space, one question I encourage you to ask yourself for each item is “does this make me smile?” If decluttering seems like a daunting task for you to take on, start with one area of your bedroom and spend 5 minutes each day working on it.

Assess your furniture
If you have furniture that’s dark in color or any furniture that doesn’t serve an important purpose in your bedroom, consider moving it to another place in your house or swap it out. Everything in your bedroom should serve the purpose of what you spend the majority of your time doing in it - sleep and getting dressed. Remove any pieces that are not necessary in your bedroom. It is too tempting to throw your stuff on that extra chair at the end of the day, causing chaos and clutter. When it comes to bedroom furniture, less is more in achieving a truly relaxing and bright environment.

Neutral color scheme
If your intention is to have a bright, serene and spacious bedroom, the color palette you choose can have a big impact. To achieve this, try sticking with a softer, more neutral color palette of whites and light shades of grays or tans. You can make an impact with small changes like updating your bedding to incorporate more whites or if you’re really wanting a change, update your wall color to something brighter and more neutral if it’s currently dark.

Get creative with lighting and window treatments
If your room has a window, make sure to have the option to make your room both light and dark with the window draperies and treatments you choose so you can let natural light in when you please. If you don’t have any windows, you can create a bright, gentle ambiance with your lighting. This may mean to some that it is time to replace the fixtures within the room, but it can be as simple as some table or floor lamps.
